David B. Houston Award
David B. Houston Human Rights and Social Justice in Latin America Award
David Houston was an economics professor and political activist at the University of Pittsburgh for more than 40 years. To honor a teacher who directed his scholarly attention to issues of social justice throughout his career, former students and colleagues of Dr. Houston, who died in 2008, have created a fund to make awards to students whose academic interests and career plans focus on human rights and social justice, particularly in Latin America. The Center for Latin American Studies invites students, especially at the graduate level, to apply for this scholarship award. The guidelines for consideration are students whose work:
- Demonstrates a clear professional commitment to social issues in Latin America.
- Draws upon a field of academic training focused on social change—such as law, economics, political science, social work, medicine or sociology.
- Seeks to produce distinctive outcomes in the form of research, teaching, educational programming, legislation and public policy or direct service.
Candidates will be evaluated based on a career path that promises to empower the student as an agent of change and service among impoverished people who are almost always members of the lowest social strata.
